Seattle to Whitefish

on the Empire Builder

The 4:45 rolled out right on time to carry us across Washington and Idaho into Montana. About 15 hours riding through forests, mountains, and plains. Smooth and quiet in our roomette. Dinner in the dining car at the 7:30 serving.

Whitefish, Montana, is on the western edge of Glacier National Park and has become a trendy destination for travelers from Seattle and Chicago. We rented our SUV from the oldest Hertz franchise in the country, and headed south and east through Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota, to see Crazy Horse and Rushmore.

Most visitors to Whitefish tend to stay around the town or tour the park so they don't put many miles on their rentals. When Dale checked the car in he was moved to call and confirm that we had actually driven 1,700 miles. He was worried tat the odometer was broken!
