Wednesday morning in the "Canyon of Heroes" for a ticker-tape parade to honor the US Women's Soccer Team for their fourth World Cup championship. We found ourselves in The Times on Thursday morning!
Wednesday evening crossing Times Square to visit the New York Public Library and have a tasty dinner at the Bryant Park Grill, watching mostly New Yorkers lounge in the serenity of one the city's great green spaces.
Thursday a morning visit to Gulliver's Gate, the largest miniature display in the world, followed by lunch at the Loeb Boathouse Express Cafe and a walk through Central Park before prepping for "Hadestown" and dinner at Sardi's after a pedicab ride in the rain!
Friday breakfast with the NYPD who appeared ready to SWAT something or someone, but after awhile simply packed up and left. The group included two motorcycle officers, a lieutenant, these four heavily-armed patrolmen, and a canine officer with his dog! We then headed to the New York Botanical Garden where we were baked by the heat but dazzled by the beauty. Back to the city on the train to Grand Central. We squeezed in a short visit to the Met and got a gander at the (full-size) Guggenheim and then had a lovely sidewalk dinner because we couldn't have one on a rooftop. Mostly bars anyway, so that can wait until 2021.
Saturday morning took us to Greenwich Village and breakfast at the Grey Dog, followed by a walk to Washington Square Park for sights and sounds unique to New York.
Saturday evening we walked to a nearby Irish Pub for a pre-play dinner during which we saw the lights flicker and TVs reset themselves but didn't know until after we left the play that it was the great "Times Square/Theatre District blackout" of 2019! Many, many people lost their seats for shows that couldn't go on, but a little bubble of cosmic grace gave us an unforgettable theatre experience at the penultimate performance of "Burn This".
Sunday morning a room-service breakfast started the day that would end our time in the city and take us back to the world. Amtrak barrels along at 110 mph in the "electric"
corridor, before switching from AC in D.C. to somewhat slower diesel power for the rest of the way ... home.
